Dog hiking on a Utah mountain trail

Built for Utah dogs and Utah lives.

Utah dogs run different. They hike Millcreek and Big Cottonwood. They meet bikes on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. They chase quail in the foothills. They live in apartments downtown and on five acres in Heber. The training that works for them has to work in their actual world, not just on a quiet sidewalk in a textbook.

This site is a free resource hub from Train Walk Poop, a Utah dog training company that's been helping families across the state for 18 years. Whether you're after a free PDF on leash work, an audiobook to listen to on the commute, or an in-person evaluation with one of our trainers, it all starts here.

Utah Dog Training FAQ

The questions Utah dog owners ask us most often.

What's the best dog training method?
There isn't one universal "best", there's the best fit for your dog, your goals, and your lifestyle. A high-drive working breed needs a different approach than an anxious rescue. The trainers who tell you only one method works are usually selling that method. Our Pros & Cons of Training Programs guide breaks down the trade-offs honestly.
Can my dog hike off-leash on Utah trails?
It depends on the trail. Many National Forest trails (Wasatch-Cache, Uinta) allow off-leash with voice control. Most state parks, city parks, and county open spaces require leashes. Always check the trailhead signs, and remember that "voice control" is a real legal standard, not a vibe. If your dog won't come back when there's a deer or another dog, they're not actually under voice control. The Off-Leash Dreams guide is the place to start.
How long does dog training take?
Most dogs see meaningful progress in 2 to 4 weeks with consistent work. Reliability under distraction (the kind you need on a Park City trail) takes 8 to 12 weeks. The biggest variable is owner consistency, not the dog. Good programs build that consistency in.
What's a board-and-train? Is it right for my dog?
Your dog stays at the trainer's facility for 2 to 6 weeks while we do the foundational work. You then come for handler-training sessions to learn how to maintain it. It's the fastest path for dogs with serious behavior issues, busy owners, or anyone who's tried other approaches without success. It's not the right fit for every dog or budget, we'll tell you straight up on the free transformation session.
How much does dog training cost in Utah?
Group classes typically run $150 to $300 for a 4 to 6 week course. Private lessons run $100 to $200/session. Board-and-train programs in Utah generally fall between $2,500 and $6,000 depending on duration and goals. Cheaper isn't always better, and most expensive isn't either, fit matters more than price.
I've watched a lot of YouTube videos. Why do I still have problems?
YouTube shows you techniques, but training is mostly about timing, body language, and reading your specific dog, none of which a video can do for you. A good trainer watches you work with your actual dog and corrects the small things you can't see yourself. That's the value of an in-person session, even a free one.
My dog is reactive. Can he be trained?
Almost always yes. "Reactive" usually means stressed, overwhelmed, or under-trained, not broken. The work involves understanding what's actually triggering it, building neutrality, and giving the dog clear leadership. This is one of the most common things we work on.
What is a Free Transformation Session?
It's a free, in-person sit-down with a Utah trainer. We evaluate your dog, identify what's really going on, and show you the path forward. Most clients leave with at least one technique they can use that day. No pressure to commit to anything, if we're not the right fit for you, we'll say so.
Do you serve Park City and Heber Valley?
Yes. We have clients in Park City, Jeremy Ranch, Snyderville, and Heber Valley. Travel arrangements vary, get on a free transformation session and we'll work out logistics that fit you.
